Stuttering is a communication disorder in which the flow of speech is broken by repetitions and prolongations or abnormal stoppages accompanied by unusual facial movements associated with the effort to speak.
There are several factors that can contribute to the development of stuttering: genetics, child development, neurophysiology - processing speech and language in different areas of the brain than those who do not stutter – and family dynamics.
Fortunately there are a variety of successful approaches for treating both children and adults.
People who stutter can benefit from treatment and learn how to speak more easily, manage their stuttering and increase their speech fluency.
Support groups like Speakeasy help -
- a problem shared is a problem halved
- you don’t have to suffer with your stuttering alone
- you can gain from others like you
- they educate the public about stuttering
They provide opportunities for stutterers to share fears and to practice therapeutic techniques to help control stuttering in a safe and supportive environment.
