In 1944 school was still held in the Meerhof Children’s Hospital for chronically ill and severely disabled children. There were no school buildings and classes were held in the hospital wards.
School buildings were later erected, and in 1969 the facilities were transferred from the Provincial Hospital Department to the Department of National Education.Today Meerhof School offers specialized education for multi-disabled learners.
A multi disciplinary team works with the parents to develop the skills of each student. Their speech therapists, physio-, and occupational therapists as well as remedial teachers see learners on a group as well as individual basis.
Therapists also assist in the preparation for, and rehabilitation after operations etc.

The school caters for a variety of learners with special needs and they have kids from three to eighteen years of age.Their students all have various special needs and disabilities which is why they can’t cope in mainstream schools.

They cater for students who have suffered from head injuries as well as students who have other disabilities like cerebral palsy, spina bifida, muscle dystrophy, osteogenesis etc.
Our goal is to assist learners to reach their full potential, and speech and occupational therapists come into the classes for group and individual therapy.
Their Speech Therapy is aimed at the specific unique needs of students. The therapists help with developing auditory perceptual and language skills, and the physically disabled students are given assistance with feeding, breath control, voice production and articulation of speech sounds.

The Faculty of Health Sciences core business is research in medical and allied fields as well as teaching students over a wide range of healthcare-related disciplines.
The world’s first successful heart transplant in 1967, as well as the research that led to the development of the CAT scanner placed the faculty and Groote Schuur Hospital on the map as sophisticated, tertiary medicine facilities of international standing.
Their Speech-Language Pathology is for people who want to assist with the needs of adults and children who have difficulties with speech, language and communication. Audiology is the profession that deals with the identification, assessment, and management of individuals with difficulties in hearing and balance.
Graduates will be able to work in a private practice, in schools, hospitals and speech therapy and audiology practices. There are opportunities to work both nationally and abroad.
The degree programmes each extend over four years of full-time study.
