The Faculty of Health Sciences core business is research in medical and allied fields as well as teaching students over a wide range of healthcare-related disciplines.
The world’s first successful heart transplant in 1967, as well as the research that led to the development of the CAT scanner placed the faculty and Groote Schuur Hospital on the map as sophisticated, tertiary medicine facilities of international standing.
Their Speech-Language Pathology is for people who want to assist with the needs of adults and children who have difficulties with speech, language and communication. Audiology is the profession that deals with the identification, assessment, and management of individuals with difficulties in hearing and balance.
Graduates will be able to work in a private practice, in schools, hospitals and speech therapy and audiology practices. There are opportunities to work both nationally and abroad.
The degree programmes each extend over four years of full-time study.

Occupational- and Speech Therapists in Somerset West felt the need for some of their stroke patients who were feeling isolated because of not being able to communicate properly and to get together with other stroke patients for mutual support. This was the start of the Helderberg Stroke Support Group.
The Group has expanded since they were established, and a Speech Therapy group was started because they realised that one of the most devastating effects of a stroke is loss of speech and language.A speech therapist can help recover these communication skills.
Stroke patients often know what they wants to say, but cannot coordinate the muscle movements which are necessary to say the word.
Intervention by a Speech Therapist can help the patient to comprehend and communicate more effectively, and to be able to function better in his environment.
